The Society’s Mission Statement
The Schooner Western Union Preservation Society is dedicated to preserving, maintaining and thus making available to the public, an opportunity to sail aboard the last working coastal schooner built in the state of Florida. The Schooner Western Union Maritime Museum will also serve as an educational opportunity for school aged children to learn and experience the maritime heritage of Key West.
The History

Built and home ported here in Key West, the Schooner Western Union Maritime Museum was launched on April 7, 1939 as a working schooner. She sailed the Caribbean and south Atlantic until 1974, logging over 30,000 miles in the service of the Western Union Company. With a 24 foot beam and drawing only 7½ feet, the Schooner Western Union Maritime Museum was designed to maintain communication cables in the shallow Gulf waters between Key West and Cuba. She was commissioned by Thompson Enterprises under contract with Western Union Company and launched off Simonton Beach. She is also on the National Register of Historic Places.

She was involved in a standoff with Cuban gun boats, participated in the Mariel Boat Lift and also served as a training vessel for troubled youths for the “Vision Quest Group”. She has been brought back to Key West and now belongs to the community.

Funding & Sponsorships
Key West is rich in maritime history and the Schooner Western Union Maritime Museum is one of the last great examples of that. The Schooner Western Union Preservation Society will strive to preserve and share this important aspect of our heritage for the many visitors and residents of our island. Initial funding will be obtained through corporate sponsorships, grants, and individual donations. Once the initial restoration is completed and Coast Guard certification is restored, funds will be generated from the daily operation of the vessel by offering sailing experiences in the waters surrounding Key West. The S.W.U.P.S. will create a fund from income exceeding operating expenses for the purpose of maintaining the vessel in the future.
